How I make an EXTRA $5,000 a month from side hustles

Working part-time as a software engineering mentor - ever heard of such a thing? You'll be amazed at how creative this economy is! Learn how I once made more than $5,000 a month from these side gigs. 😎

A Laptop and Internet

Hey Pirates, PK here. Today, I will share how I made more than $5,000 a month from my online side hustles. I repeat. It's $5000 extra income generated after work, part-time, and fully remote from home, apart from my full-time job at Microsoft. All I need? A laptop and internet. 💻 Let me also emphasize that these side hustles are super easy to do with zero upfront cost and risk. And no, it's not YouTube, social media, drop shipping, day trading, stocks, or cryptocurrency; it's an actual job as a 1099 contractor.

I’ll share four things here. One, what the side hustles are. Two, the exact figures I earned from each job, including my hourly rate (I'll show you my payroll history!) Three, the pros and cons of these side hustles. Four, how I found these gigs. 🏴‍☠️

The Gigs

The first online side hustle is career mentoring. I give career advice to prospective software engineers and sometimes professionals. The duties include career consulting, editing resumes, and reviewing assignments. The goal is to be the north star of their career journey. It works like this: I set up availabilities on my calendar, for example, every Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 10 pm. Mentees book a call session on those availabilities for whatever software engineering-related questions they have. All I have to do is check my calendar, join the online sessions, share advice, and answer any questions. Easy, right? Each session is 30 to 45 minutes long.

The second online side hustle is conducting mock interviews. You might be wondering why people pay to do a "practice" interview in the first place. Software engineers are typically assessed by their problem-solving skills through coding interviews. They are critical in landing a job at tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft. Candidates have a high demand to put on the prestigious title, which the market supplies in the form of mock interviews. Mock interviews aim to train candidates with close-to-real interview experience while providing practical advice and feedback. Its purpose is to help people land their dream jobs.

My third and last online side hustle is private tutoring. It's converted to online since the pandemic, and I currently teach computer science with a minimum of three people. I would also argue that the students’ experience has gotten better by going online since the lessons are recorded. They can also save time on travel.

Extra Income

So these are the three online side hustles I've been doing to generate extra income. What's my pay? It's around $50 to $70 per hour, depending on the gig. For example, here's the pay breakdown for July: $3,972.80 from one, $840 from another, and $550 from private lessons. The total is $5,362.80 in July alone! How did I do in other months? I made $2,474.70 in April, $2,950.25 in May, $4,104.70 in June, and finally, over $5,000 in July.

As you can see, the number goes up every month because the more I do, the better I get! Doing well leads to good reviews and more people wanting to book a session with me. Take a look at what my calendar looked like in July!

PK’s Calendar in July, 2021

Crazy, huh? On my busiest day, I would be working 8 hours for my full-time job, 5 hours part-time, and additional 2-3 hours working on my YouTube channel. That's 15 hours straight! Phew 😵‍💫 To be honest, though, I probably won't be able to repeat the $5,000-a-month streak in the coming months. I do feel burned out now. But I have to admit. It's rewarding!

The Pros and Cons

Let's discuss the pros and cons of online mentorship. I could think of eight pros. One, there's literally zero upfront cost. Like I mentioned earlier, all you need are a laptop and good reliable internet. Two, easy. They require very little preparation, if not none; you just need to be present and answer questions. Three, fully remote. 100% online. You can do these with your pajamas on! Thus four, safety. Zero exposure to the pandemic. Five, work flexibility. I can set my own schedule. Six, growth. You'll learn new things with the new role. Seven, good pay, or at least I think it's decent. Eight, rewarding experience. It's about helping others. So these are the eight pros. What about the cons? I could think of two cons. One, you have to trade your time for money; I have to be physically present for the calls. Two, it requires a lot of energy. Sharing advice, giving suggestions, and helping others are rewarding, but it gets challenging after a few hours; I'll be exhausted in the end.

Finding the Gigs

Lastly, how did I find out about these side hustles? I was bored. The country shut down, and it was no longer safe to go outside (during the pandemic). Even if you do, there wasn't much to do anyways. So I thought, "Hey, why not make a productive use of my spare time by doing something constructive?" So I began googling part-time software engineering jobs and became a career mentor! After submitting my resume and completing the interviews, I got the job within a matter of weeks! ✌️

Alright. We've explored the side hustles that generated more than $5,000 in a single month. What do you guys think? Were you guys aware that such roles exist? Let me know in the comments below. And hey, before you leave, give it a try and google part-time opportunities in your industry. You'll be amazed at how creative the economy is! Who knows? There might be unexpected opportunities lurking somewhere. Give it a shot, and don't forget to subscribe. 😎

Thanks for watching. I'll see you at the next one. Bye
