🏴☠️👑 [WARNING❗️] Tech layoffs continue with Meta cutting additional 10k and Amazon 9k. Is tech still a promising career? 🧐

🏢 Tech companies are once again preparing for layoffs, with Meta and Amazon planning to cut an additional 10,000 and 9,000 workers, respectively. 🪓 It’s also unclear whether other companies would follow suit for a “leaner” workforce. 🥶 Despite nearly 100,000 workers being laid off in the US tech sector over the past year, and my own concerns about job security, would I still choose a tech career if I could go back? 😰 Unfortunately (?), the answer is yes. 🙄
Here are my reasons:
💰 It pays well. According to SHRM, the average salary of tech workers is almost $105k. The 2021 median US income? $70k.
🧩 These layoffs represent a small fraction of the tech workforce. For instance, Amazon’s announcement to cut 27,000 jobs amounts to just 1.7% of their 2021 workforce.
🔥 Tech jobs are still high in demand, with almost 80% of laid-off tech workers finding new roles within three months of being let go.
🌐 In 2023, every company is a tech company. Let’s be honest. Tech isn’t just a part of a job anymore; it’s a part of our daily lives.
🙋 Then why are major tech companies releasing the “incredibly talented” individuals they worked so hard to recruit? 🤷 A simple answer’s they over-hired. Take Amazon, for instance, which more than doubled their headcount from 798,000 to 1.6 million during the pandemic. 📈 With consumer habits returning to the pre-pandemic levels, it’s no longer practical to maintain the same headcount. 😮💨
